The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector
By Ted Wright
In this parable Jesus confronts the sin of spiritual pride and highlights the virtue of humility. Like the Pharisees we also have the tendency to compare ourselves with others, when in reality the comparison we should make is with the holiness of a righteous God. Like the prophet Isaiah, it is only when we see ourselves in light of God’s blazing holiness that we have a correct and proper understanding of ourselves and we fall on our face and cry “Away from me, for I am a man of unclean lips and I live among a people of unclean lips, for my eyes have seen the King!”
